Developing a feeling to enjoy exercise never happens on its own. You can enjoy it right from day 1 if you know your fitness goals and the right training program for it. But if you are clueless about the right training program, you will never be able to enjoy exercise because there won’t be any progress.
If you are not enjoying your exercise, there might be a few other reasons. In this blog, we are going to cover them all!
5 Reasons why you are not able to Enjoy Exercise:
1. Doing too much too early
People who exercise for the first time often find it difficult to stick to a routine. But, if you can make it past the first few months, you will start to enjoy the benefits of exercise.
The key is to start with low-impact exercises like walking, yoga or swimming.
Often this is seen that new fitness enthusiasts put too much effort too early.
Most of the times that effort is more than their physical capability. And the reason why they are able to do it is because they are too pumped too early.
In the heat of those early days they workout very hard.
But once fatigue starts hitting, and the body starts giving up, they lose their control and slowly start losing all the motivation to workout.
This is not the right way to start exercising!
As a beginner, you should always start with low impact exercises, or if some of your exercises are high impact, they should be started on the advice of a fitness trainer.
You can never go 0 to 100 mile right from the day 1.
Make yourself comfortable by doing the easier exercises first. Once your body is ready and charged for more, you can then move on to more intense activities like running or weightlifting.
This way, your body will slowly get used to the workout routine and your muscles will become stronger over time.
2. Not working out in a routine
In order to gain any benefit from exercise, it is important to do it in a routine. Doing workouts sporadically are never enjoyable, because then your body won’t get used to it.
The following are some benefits of working out in a routine:
- You will have an easier time sticking with your exercise plan and not giving up midway through the week.
- You will have an easier time finding time in your day to fit in workouts because they are scheduled ahead of time.
- You will be able to keep track of how much exercise you have done each day by looking at your schedule and seeing what exercises were planned for that day.
Once you build a habit of working out in routine, you will start seeing progress, and your future exercises will automatically become enjoyable.
3. Not embracing discomfort
Achieving a fitness goal is not a piece of cake, or a walk in the park. There is always some sort of discomfort associated with achieving any goal in life.
If you are not ready to embrace discomfort with an open heart, you won’t be able to enjoy your workout.
It will be like a daily chore for you.
The best way to approach exercises is to accept that it will be uncomfortable but i’m going to do it because I know that the reward is bigger than the discomfort.
4. Setting unrealistic goals
There are 5 parameters of a goal. A goal is always specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. If all these parameters are met, your goal becomes in short a SMART goal.
Before setting any fitness goal, walk it through all these 5 parameters, if your goal is SMART, it is achievable, and if not, it won’t be achievable and become an unrealistic goal.
So trying to achieve an unrealistic goal is also a reason why people struggle to enjoy exercise.
5. Not showing real commitment
There are 2 ways of doing something: one is to give it time, and the 2nd is giving it both your time and heart.
If you workout in routine but do it in a way that it just tick marks a day into your workout calendar, you are only fooling yourself.
This sort of workout will never result into anything positive.
The best way to exercise is to do it with full focus and commitment.
You can achieve more in 15 minutes compared to someone else spending an hour in the gym.
I’m sure you have heard many people bragging about how much time they are committing to something and still not achieving the results.
The reason is that they are possibly only committing time, and not any real effort. That’s why there are no results coming out of their time spent.
Some other Important Issues Related to Enjoying Exercise:
1. Why is Working out so Boring?
There are basically 8 reasons why working out is so boring:
- Most workouts are repetitive.

Many people dread exercising because they see it as a chore and they don’t enjoy it. This is especially true for those who have just started to work out.
But there are ways to make exercising more enjoyable.
One way is to find an exercise that you enjoy doing. If you like the feeling of being in the water, then swimming might be a good option for you.
If you like being active, then try running or biking instead of walking on the treadmill in the gym.
